This week seemed like a fun week for me, judging by my posts, but actually I was saddened by some shocking news. First I found out that a friend of a friend has lymphoma cancer (Hodgkin’s Lymphoma)- I was totally shocked since I’ve seen her before and she was always fun and energetic – then a few days later, I hear another friend was just diagnosed with lung cancer (non-small cell lung cancer). How sad … both of these girls are under 30 and this suffering is upon them. I feel like I can relate having to hear a diagnosis that will change your life – but no – this isn’t the same – my diagnosis didn’t have a possible death sentence.
I have recently met with my sister’s friend, she is a naturopath – she chose this career path because her husband was diagnosed with cancer. She treated him naturally, along with medical treatments, and he is in REMISSION now. One of the things we talked about was my health – and one of the top nutrients she mentioned was WHEATGRASS juice. (I read about it but haven’t rushed to buy it yet – she said it’s KEY to purify the blood and promote healing.

WHEATGRASS – How It Works
If we look at oxygen as a bullet to kill cancer cells, then we should look at wheatgrass as a shotgun blast at treating cancer. The number of ways it deals with cancer is incredible. First of all it contains chlorophyll, which has almost the same molecular structure as hemoglobin. Chlorophyll increases hemoglobin production, meaning more oxygen gets to the cancer. Selenium and laetrile are also in wheatgrass, both are anticancer. Chlorophyll and selenium also help build the immunity system. (Ella adds: loads of Selenium is also found in Brazilian Nuts.) Furthermore, wheatgrass is one of the most alkaline foods known to mankind. And the list goes on.

Why a Superfood?
Wheatgrass contains at least 13 vitamins (several are antioxidants), including B12, many minerals and trace elements, including selenium, and all 20 amino acids. It also contains the hormone abscisic acid (also called: dormin, see below), the antioxidant enzyme SOD (Superoxide Dismutase, see below) and over 30 other enzymes, the antioxidant enzyme cytochrome oxidase (see below), laetrile (see its own page), and a whole lot of other nutrients.
- “superoxide dismutase (SOD) – which converts two superoxide anions into a molecule of hydrogen peroxide and one of oxygen”
In other words, SOD converts one of the most dangerious free radicals: Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), into a hydrogen peroxide molecule (which has an extra oxygen molecule to kill cancer cells) and an oxygen molecule.
Now let’s talk about cytochrome oxidase.
- “In 1938, the great cancer scientist and researcher Paul Gerhardt Seeger, M.D., revealed that the true cause of the cancerous degeneration of a cell results from the destruction of a specific respiratory enzyme, cytochrome oxidase. In other words, cancer in the cell is caused by disturbance of oxygen utilization, or cell respiration.
But it may be that chlorophyll is the best part of wheatgrass.
- “In a study reported in the journal Mutation Research comparing the anticancer effect of chlorophyll to beta-carotene, and vitamins A, C and E, chlorophyll was proven to be a more effective antimutagen than any of them.”
I suspect the main reason chlorophyll is so good at dealing with cancer is the oxygen availability it provides.
- “Both chlorophyll (as in wheatgrass juice) and hemoglobin (red blood cells) are molecularly similar. The only actual difference is that the central element in chlorophyll is magnesium and in hemoglobin it is iron. Chlorophyll has the ability to break down poisonous carbon dioxide and release free oxygen.” Read more here.
Since our conversation a few weeks ago, I have purchased some and started drinking one every morning. I feel even better and I can really smell remission for Myasthenia Gravis from here. Once I heard of my friends’ diagnosis I immediately suggested Wheatgrass Juice – would you believe they haven’t heard of it. With all the medical help and all the information out there – it still seems that word of mouth is the best source of communication. I will give you updates on how they are doing and meanwhile you can try some Wheatgrass Juice for yourself. Remember it’s important to maintain your good health and prevent illnesses as well.
KEY FACTS ABOUT CANCER
- Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide: it accounted for 7.4 million deaths (around 13% of all deaths) in 2004.
- Lung, stomach, liver, colon and breast cancer cause the most cancer deaths each year.
- The most frequent types of cancer differ between men and women.
- More than 30% of cancer deaths can be prevented.1
- Tobacco use is the single most important risk factor for cancer.
- Cancer arises from a change in one single cell. The change may be started by external agents and inherited genetic factors.
- Deaths from cancer worldwide are projected to continue rising, with an estimated 12 million deaths in 2030.
TREATMENT & CARE
- Treatment aims to cure, prolong life and improve quality of life for patients. Some of the most common cancer types, such as breast cancer, cervical cancer and colorectal cancer, have high cure rates when detected early and treated according to best practice. Principal treatment methods are surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Fundamental for adequate treatment is an accurate diagnosis through imaging technology (ultrasound, endoscopy or radiography) and laboratory (pathology) investigations.
- Relief from pain and other problems can be achieved in over 90% of cancer patients through palliative care. Effective ways exist to provide palliative care for patients and their families in low resource settings. More information here.

Hi Ella,
As a friend in our MG journey, just checking in.
Are you still on your supplements? What about wheatgrass juice? Are you growing your own?
While in Houston, recieving proton radiation treatments for thymoma, I had daily wheatgrass juice “shots’ and loved it. It is like my body craved it and said “yes”, we like this!
I have not started any supplements as I have not talked to my neuro about it. I plan to discuss this with him this week.
Best regards,
Sherry from Texas

Sherry, so good to hear from you.
Honestly, you just reminded me that I haven’t been updating my Success in Progress.
I stopped taking wheatgrass juice because of the cost. It’s $12 per tiny bottles of 6. And the juicers are about $400 – the grass itself is very cheap but they gotta make the money somewhere ;)
Yes I still take my supplements. I’m still on the diet as well, just added no wheat and no eggs into it. I feel great though.
I hope you appointments go well. Have you had an allergy test done also?
I had one recently and I showed little reaction to wheat and eggs – my doc even said NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. But I’ve figured, since my body DOES have a reaction to it – I guess I should take it seriously. So I’ve been almost vegan (I still eat a little bit of fish), no wheat and oat, and no acidic foods. It’s made a huge difference.
Good luck. Thanks for visiting me ;)
