I’m still in a sweet mode… it must be from the last posts ;) And when I walked through our garden yesterday I noticed the last few berries on the raspberry bush. Our bushes gave us an abundant supply of berries this summer, which made me and my daughter very very happy and full ;) We have most of our bushes in a sunny spot, climbing ever so high to wrap them selves around our gazebo (posted here). And then there’s also a few bushes in a not-so-thriving spot – in the shade. I seemed to be upset at how the flowers were late bloomers and thinking that the berries will never come… Well, now I see my planting mistake as a clever formula to have raspberries ALL summer long.
So with sweet berries in mind and a HOT day sizzling away – we went ahead and made one of the most delicious smoothies…
Here is what you need: crushed ice, raspberries + strawberries (optional), rice milk, honey (or agave nectar as a vegan option), a few mint leaves, blenderMy daughter always loves helping me in the kitchen, especially when she can eat the ingredients. Some made it to the blender though and we were blending away with our mouths watering. I used a few strawberries (store bought, unfortunately) as I didn’t think we had enough raspberries. But the dominant fruit and flavour was definitely RASPBERRY. Feel free to throw in what you like and customize it your way. For another dairy free option, you can use soy milk.
It was a beautiful day already… but we added way more sweetness to it. I will miss those berries… I am still hopeful they will come back in the fall – I think we had them last year but I can’t remember exactly…
I do have one gardening dilemma with these raspberries. Are they supposed to be trimmed for the winter or just left alone? I am hearing mixed opinions and I wonder if anyone has had some experience with them. This is our third summer in this house and we never trimmed them… they just kept growing and growing… I know the larger they get the more berries we’ll have next year but I’m just really unsure. If anyone has some raspberry bush gardening tips, please share.

Oh delicious! My husband just planted some raspberry bushes that he found on sale. We didn’t think they would bloom until next year, but they are already! It’s awesome you had such a great harvest, you have to sell a limb to buy good ones. Those recipes are divine and we will be trying them.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos too.
