food matters : you are what you eat

November 28, 2012 by Ella

Three years ago when I visited my neurologist who specializes in MG for one of my regular visits, (that was the time I was at my worst and could barely walk, talk and swallow food) Still, I felt that my prescribed medications of unsafe steroids and immunosuppressants weren’t right for me. I was scared that this ‘treatment’ could make my illness worse or bring on a myriad of other health problems and I shared my concern with her. This is a fragment of our conversation:

Me: “I was thinking of trying a natural treatment instead and see how I feel with a diet change and supplements.”

Neuro: “Sure, if you have a lot of money and you want to waste it all.”

Yes, really! Can you believe this? That’s how understanding my own doctor was. They leave no room for nutrition and yet, rejecting these steroids and immunosuppressants and changing my diet and lifestyle was exactly what helped me.

It’s a choice, you don’t have to be sick.

Wow, good for you for taking your health into your own hands! You must be so proud :) It’s scary how much we rely on drugs that have so many side effects and can cause more problems than they fix!

Thanks Gabby… we also rely too much on the doctors to know how to fix us. Most of them just have never studied nutrition. Wish more of them connected the two.

Thank you for sharing Ella! You are one more example that food and self care are medicine. Following your heart and intuition is always the right choice.

      Thank you Marisa ;)
It is about that gut feeling and to trust yourself. But it’s also about sticking to the changes you make; what you eat, but also what you don’t eat. xoxo thanks for your comment. Ella
