I love this set up with the vintage linens – I think this is where I’m going with my new decorating direction. Since a short little while I’ve been adding a few more antique and thrifted pieces into my serving ware. I will soon reveal my little collection of some pretty little old things I have laying around. On my wish list now, are some antique laces and embroidered tone on tone linen table cloths. And some beautiful antique silver candle holders would be absolutely beautiful…

- – 10 years ago I was very very much a modern girl. I’m talking about sleek chrome accessories, clean modern furniture
- and nothing that is rustic and the word antique made my face cringe ;)

Do you stick to your decorating style – or do you change things up and experiment sometimes with decor pieces, textures, colours?

inspirations for spring

This image of a lovely picnic on a sunny day is a sign that spring is somewhere out there…. ahhh I can’t wait! Aside from the feeling of a laid back afternoon snacking on little sandwiches and fresh berries – there is a whole load of inspiration there also with these precious fabrics and colours. Can you guess who these goodies are from? None other than….

H&M HOME

Here’s some more amazing sets of decor for Spring 2011

Here’s wishing and hoping it makes its way across the ocean sometime soon ;)

Meanwhile, there’s enough inspiration there to ‘borrow’ some ideas for some diy’s – I mean, check out these cool ruffles on these cushions, the fabric flower baskets, the canvas bags and placemats, the prints of veggies are too cute ;) But my favourite is that white round button cushion – LOVE.

Spring is such a great time to refresh the home right? We are talking about painting the living room – but then the kitchen comes up – and in between I am thinking I want a skylight – and some crown moulding or wooden beams to add some architectural details to the space – - if only money would grow on trees ;)  but a new sofa is in the real planning – but which one – I think I might need your help people (I already know what cushions I want on it ;)

Do you freshen up your home for spring?

a pretty window {diy}

This is what is dressing up my bay window  in my office these days. Do you like? Maybe you’re tired of seeing red roses from Valentine’s… well not me ;)  This did go up the weekend before Valentine’s Day but I didn’t have the energy to shoot it right away – it was a busy weekend I remember and there was no point in rushing to share this little thing with the world ;) If you’re wondering where I got these cute glass hanging vases – well, I would tell you – at a grocery store and they’re not glass! Feeling a bit puzzled? I think this image will explain:

I just love seeing beyond what an item is intended for and I especially examine interesting packaging and think – what can I do with you? And these lovely Coca-Cola bottles, that were hanging around since Christmas – have finally gotten a way to be reused, revived and look beautiful again ;)

To Do: rinse the Coca Cola ball bottles, peel off label and remove cap and plastic ring, wrap some thin wire around the neck and hang in a favourite place (I hung mine to a drapery rod), fill with water and add in cute buds!
:: don’t have these cute ball bottles around anymore – how about using baby food jars? I think that would be also pretty ;)

What a way to up-cycle and feel good about reusing something that would go into the trash. I’m loving my window of roses and I hope you’re inspired to turn some trash into something pretty. xo

our home at christmas

Here are a few shots of our home with a few Christmas decorations in place, ready for the big festive dinner on Christmas Eve.

I brought in touches of rustic-warmth with modern touch to the living room, hallway and kitchen. I used a traditional colour story of mostly red and green with interesting natural textures like burlap, twigs and pine cones etc.

christmas-decorating branch with stockings hung from a clockI was inspired by an earlier post with hung stockings from a branch – I completely had to pull this off! I used an old decorative branch I had (yes I already had branches in the home – that’s how much I like them ;)  (this could easily be supplied through a nice bundled up walk around the neighbourhood with a pruner in your pocket ;) sshhh.) I found this beautiful mix of stockings in a local shop that same day and I was very excited to put this together. I didn’t want to drill in new holes in the wall so I used a great space under our large clock. I used an obvious hanging method of red yarn so it becomes part of the rustic decoration. This vignette is right next to our dining room table so it’s creating a lovely festive look for the holidays. I still hope to personalize them somehow with little touches that make them more ‘us’ (but maybe for next year). Now it’s time to fill them up to the brim ;)

christmas-decorating2 tableOur table is created with simple modest styling. I used a large linen tablecloth with a layer of burlap as a table runner. The burlap in a fantastic addition that is super inexpensive – $1 per metre at a local garden supply store). It creates a fab look with a rustic feel – pulls the natural elements together and the texture is beautiful next to the linen. I added simple wooden candle sticks and glass votive holders with pine springs. Simple with lots of room for serving the Holiday Dinner.

Next to the table, we have a set of wooden shelves that got spruced up for the Holidays as well. Pine branches are in all white vases and a hand-carved nativity set adds a beautiful touch.

christmas-decorating4 table and chair with christmas wreathOur living room overall has a a few rustic and earthy Holiday touches. A gold olive leaf wreath, I made (I’ll do a close up later) is hung in between two bookcases. Originally it was intended for the front door but the leaves are very delicate with the glitter and I think it would get ruined completely in the cold and wind. Here it hangs as a highlight in the room with it’s shimmering delight.

A faux fur cushion is a must this winter – I made mine with a small piece of faux fur fabric I bought and roughly hand stitched on the back – quick and easy and temporary – although it could last right through till the end of Winter.

By the way, it is the first day of Winter today! Can you tell the difference? ha ha I certainly can’t. We’ve had snow on the ground for almost a month now and the frost bites of my face as soon as I open the front door ;)
Four more months of this – bring it on! Funny, a 3 year old doesn’t show any negativity for the colder weather – we have a lot to learn from our kids ;)

Back to the Holiday decorating – I will post a few more shots of what is happening around the home – like the Christmas tree – which fell again last night…. well, not entirely – it fell but didn’t hit the ground because it was hung onto a wire this time ;)  It made it through the night with it’s new stand so hopefully it will be just fine.

Onto other news, I couldn’t finish shooting our home yesterday because we got a new addition to the living room – which is an early Christmas gift from my husband – an entertainment unit for that other early Christmas gift from my f-i-l.  I’m the type of girl that gets more excited about furniture than diamond earrings (which I still don’t own to this date). I saw a beautiful shelving unit at my fave store and took a photo of it with my cell phone to show my husband. I thought it would be a collaborative decision and purchase – but the guy, ok. the sweet guy shows up with it yesterday evening! No red ribbon but none is needed – BEST GIFT EVER!

Have a Happy Day everyone! Did you get any early Christmas gifts already?
I hope you liked the Holiday Home Tour – more to come, I promise ;)

Big Warm Hugs!

PS. Today is a traditional Holiday bake-athon at my sisters. Can’t wait!
Lil’ sis – we will miss you terribly today. Where the heck are you in Cambodia now? Do they even have Christmas there? ;) love u.

christmas inspiration

I fell in love with these photos right at first glance. The simplicity, modern details and the soothing feel of whites, greys and lavenders make it just magical. Take a look…

I love seeing this tree in the big wicker basket. And it’s not heavily decorated with the ornaments at all which makes it breathe and look light and airy…5223952251

Yes, purple tones are huge this season in fashion but what a great way to replace the colour story this Christmas and create a soothing feel with lavenders, fresh greens and whites.

Beautiful kitchen!

This next photo is from a different home, but I also love the room with it’s clean slate.

And I couldn’t resist posting these beautiful vignettes.

I can’t wait for the holidays. I still haven’t done much in terms of decorating. My, I need to get going.

I’m sort of the last-minute do-er when it comes to Christmas. We usually decorate the tree the weekend before the Holidays. So the magic is yet to happen at our place. How about you my friends, have you dec’d the halls already? When do you dress up the tree?

Hugs
