a portrait of a heart

We enjoyed another craft day over the weekend with a little sweet ‘heart’ theme again. My daughter had so much fun doing this ‘canvas’ heart from dried beans and grains. It was messy but good fun.  And we now have a beautiful eco-friendly heart canvas to hang in our kitchen – the ‘heart’ of our home.

We have embraced eco-crafting fully and just enjoy creating something from things we already have. In this case I used an empty pizza box, flipped inside out and used that as our ‘canvas’ base. The decorations were all natural beautiful textures of millet grains, lentils, black and white rice, ground walnut shells (birdcage litter).

Supplies : pizza box, an assortment of dried beans and grains, good quality non-toxic glue and brush to spread it evenly and a hot glue gun. A sheet of extra cardboard for the pizza box as a filler helps it to keep shape. paper towel, large cardboard to work on (as this is a little messy), a box to catch grains that fall off, vacuum for clean up.

What to do: 1 – 3. open the pizza box inside out and hot glue the two side panels. 4. insert a sheet of folded cardboard so it fills the inside of the box so it doesn’t warp in. Not shown: If you plan to hang your piece and need a hole in the back, make it now by punching in a nail a few inches from the top in the centre.

5. paint a heart shape with the glue. 6 – 7. sprinkle your choice of grains 8. press down with a paper towel to get more grains to hold onto the glue. 9. shake off excess. (we had a bit of an accident with the glue splattering too much, but all worked out fine, we wiped off the extra rice from the centre and proceeded with the next.)

This is one of those project that is meant to be rustic – so the imperfections just add character to your own work of art. Embrace them ;)

10 – 12. continue as before, painting a heart with a glue, sprinkling grains, pressing and shaking off excess.

Our heart consisted of : the orange heart = split red lentils. black heart = black rice. brown heart = walnut ground shells (we already had a bag of this as birdcage litter). white heart in centre = white rice. background = mixed hot cereal grains, but millet would work well.

When my girl had the heart shapes in place, she leaned back looking it over and exclaimed “this looks like a portrait of a heart” ~ hence the name of this craft ;)

This was so much fun! My four year old was so focused and led the entire craft project on her own. I helped a bit with brushing the glue closer to the finished hearts etc. – but this was really her independent work. What a little treasure she created ~ it will go up in our kitchen as soon as we make a good home for it – to symbolize “the heart of our home”.

ps. remember this is kinda messy. have a vacuum standing by ;)

I hope you’ve enjoyed our eco-craft of our ‘Portrait of a Heart’. I hope you’ll create your own messy craft with the kiddos in your family. This is a beautiful craft not just for Valentine’s Day but to leave out in a special place all year round. xo

photo cards with candy cane hearts

Happy Holidays to you my sweet friends!

Christmas is almost here! Oh my, how did that time fly? ;) I hope you’re enjoying this time of the year and are ready for a beautiful weekend ahead hopefully filled with love, kisses, and sweets….

It’s actually the Love and Sweets that’s the inspiration for my tutorial today. I’ve created these little special Candy Cane Photo Cards for my daughter to give as little gifts to her classmates and teachers. And I’ve created a tutorial along the way to show you how to do these too ;)

It’s quite easy and quick to pull off still in time for your friends and family. Especially if it’s a smaller quantity – and not the 25 cards I’ve managed to do last night ;) Ohh now I do wish I showed you this tutorial way before so you’d have lots of time to make these, but for now I work with last-minute need-by-the-morning scheduling. If it’s too late, make sure you bookmark this page for next year! For now here’s what to do to make these lovely cand

Supplies Needed: printed photos, candy canes, exacto knife, twist ties

Directions: 1-2. Prep the candy cane heart by taping the two candy canes together. Prep your photos with the proportions matching the size of the candy cane heart. 3. Add slits with the knife to the area you want to fasten the candy cane hearts to. 4. Fasten the twist ties to secure the hearts in place. 5-6. Keep going until the last heart is in the arms of love ;)

* a big thank you to my little sister for taping the hearts together *

All are done! Time to give ;)

Having just picked my daughter up already after her X-Mas party at Kindergarten ~ I have to say, at first glance the teachers smiled and loved them! It was one of my best projects I’ve ever done ~ now I don’t think I can stop there. There’s still my sisters and grandma and grandpa and our friends…. I think I need to put my elf hat back on ;)

I hope you’re having a wonderful Holiday Season! Sending big warm Christmasy hugs your way ;) xo Ella

princess paper mask tutorial

We love getting crafty at our house and making a big mess. Although, I think a crafting mess isn’t a mess at all – it’s an expression of your creativity! Is it not? ;)

With Halloween just around the corner, my daughter and I have been dreaming up things we could make – some are a little bit out there, like a unicorn (although, I’m sure that could be done if I just went through some awesome blogs out there). So after hours, actually more like weeks of planning we finally decided to make some masks. And we decided on a beautiful Princess Venetian-inspired Paper Mask (and a Catwoman – still to come).

This project is very easy and could be done in under an hour probably if you have the supplies on hand.
What you will need: tracing paper and/ or cardstock paper, scissors, pencil, non toxic strong glue, lace fabric, ribbons, feathers, decorative accents, stick-on crystals, elastic band (could be decorative)
Steps 1-3: measure the person’s face to determine distance for the eyes, draw your shape or tracing paper or directly on cardstock and cut out.
Step 4 double-checking eye cut outs
Step 5-6 tracing and cutting out onto cardstock (you may skip the tracing paper if you feel comfortable in drawing the shape right onto the cardstock.
Step 8: our mask bases are cut from cardstock and the decorations are waiting to dress them up (there are two – there’s a Catwoman mask in the making still ;)

Step 8: prepare all your accessories you plan to add. Cut the lace in the desired shape  and use the scraps of lace for a flower.
Step 9: stitch the flower by picking up all the layered scraps in the middle and stitching right through to hold it in place.
Step 10: spread an even coat of glue and press all around hold it in place*
Step 11-12: add stick-on crystals and stitch in the elastic band

*to speed up process start by cutting the mask template and lace fabric and glue it in place. while it’s drying you can proceed with the flower.

My daughter loves this mask so much – we realized it looked a lot like the mask Hilary Duff was wearing in A Cinderella Story (my daughter saw some of this movie and she’s excited about it even more now ;)

This is a really fun and easy projects. I happened to have all these supplies so I did not even need a trip to a craft store. So it’s an extra bonus if you can reuse items you already have making it more eco friendly. The lace I used was a little piece I had from my curtains in my home office (background in the top photo). You can change up the decorations and use up what you have to accessorize your own mask. Older kids can make their own – it’s an exciting project for crafters all ages ;)  I hope you will have fun in creating your own simple Princess Paper Mask!

ps. this mask tutorial is great to do in time for Halloween or to bookmark and do at Christmas or any time at all for some fantasy play.  xo

roundup : halloween crafts

Hello everyone. Halloween is almost here. Are you ready?

Here are some awesome crafts you could still do in time for the big scary night!

1. Perching Blackbirds

2. Owl Costume – ohh I love this!

3. Felted Mummy Doll

4. Black Cats

5. Salt Dough Pumpkins

I’m still trying to squeeze some crafting for this Halloween, I hope that will actually happen as I would like to get my daughter involved – she loves it when we do something fun together. I really like these projects above – they’re simple yet very creative and fun ;) And not freakish like some decorations out there.

I think Trick or Treating will be very tough this year with a very sensitive 4 year old. I think we might just end up going to our two neighbours and we’ll call it a night. Do you have little sensitive ones that are having a hard time dealing with the frightfulness out there? How do you deal with it? Please share as I will need some help here  ;)

Are you making some Halloween decorations or crafts?
Please share and leave a link to something you’ve done! We would love to see your creations.

diy roundup : upcycling egg cartons

It’s mid April, and I can’t believe how fast time is flying. Spring isn’t showing its full beauty yet, at least in these parts. But Easter is still happening right on schedule and it’s just around the corner. It’s next weekend! Oh my!

With all that excitement there is, of course, some necessary fun crafting to be had  in time for the big Holiday. And what better supply to use – than the super-economical, eco-friendly egg cartons!

Take a look at these super awesome craft DIY ideas and tutorials (links below) using egg cartons!

Aren’t these awesome? I love the simplicity of the material, how it comes free with the purchase of eggs, how easy it is to work with and how versatile. You could totally create a designer decor piece (like the lamp, hello?), or just do a cute craft project with your kids. Here are the links for each tutorial:

1. Egg Carton Flower Wreath (using this tutorial)

I love this wreath – I will try to do this with my daughter. So simple but has so much impact and fun if you include the kids.

2. Egg Carton Daffodils

These daffodils are so pretty, who knew that the egg carton shapes would form so beautifully into daffodils.

3. Egg Carton Flower Pendant Light

Now this is eggstra crazy. A pendant light? Wow, is all I gotta say ;)

4. Flower Fairy Lights

This is one of my favourite projects ever, but these egg carton shapes look a bit european or something. They have a very distinguished shape which I don’t think is around these parts. Very pretty though. Definitely on my To Do list.

I hope you’re inspired with today’s upcycling roundup. Are you planning to do some crafting for this Easter? Perhaps with some egg cartons??? ;D
