photo cards with candy cane hearts

Happy Holidays to you my sweet friends!

Christmas is almost here! Oh my, how did that time fly? ;) I hope you’re enjoying this time of the year and are ready for a beautiful weekend ahead hopefully filled with love, kisses, and sweets….

It’s actually the Love and Sweets that’s the inspiration for my tutorial today. I’ve created these little special Candy Cane Photo Cards for my daughter to give as little gifts to her classmates and teachers. And I’ve created a tutorial along the way to show you how to do these too ;)

It’s quite easy and quick to pull off still in time for your friends and family. Especially if it’s a smaller quantity – and not the 25 cards I’ve managed to do last night ;) Ohh now I do wish I showed you this tutorial way before so you’d have lots of time to make these, but for now I work with last-minute need-by-the-morning scheduling. If it’s too late, make sure you bookmark this page for next year! For now here’s what to do to make these lovely cand

Supplies Needed: printed photos, candy canes, exacto knife, twist ties

Directions: 1-2. Prep the candy cane heart by taping the two candy canes together. Prep your photos with the proportions matching the size of the candy cane heart. 3. Add slits with the knife to the area you want to fasten the candy cane hearts to. 4. Fasten the twist ties to secure the hearts in place. 5-6. Keep going until the last heart is in the arms of love ;)

* a big thank you to my little sister for taping the hearts together *

All are done! Time to give ;)

Having just picked my daughter up already after her X-Mas party at Kindergarten ~ I have to say, at first glance the teachers smiled and loved them! It was one of my best projects I’ve ever done ~ now I don’t think I can stop there. There’s still my sisters and grandma and grandpa and our friends…. I think I need to put my elf hat back on ;)

I hope you’re having a wonderful Holiday Season! Sending big warm Christmasy hugs your way ;) xo Ella

diy : faux fur stocking

Hello my friends. It is 10 days to go till Christmas! Are you excited? I am sure you are…. ;) We are busy busy busy with things around the house (after a kitchen renovation – you can just imagine the work that still needs to be done, yes even 3 months later ;) and then there’s shopping, and catching up with my awesome baby sister and getting to know her ‘mate’ ;)

That’s right, good times are happening ~ we all dressed up our Christmas tree last nigh while listening to Christmas carols of course, and drinking Cranberry Peppermint tea – that my sister, the mixologist, created.  And my daughter was very busy counting on her fingers the number 5 – which represents the number of people now living in our house ;) Fun!

But now let’s pause this excitement for a moment, because I want to share with you a fun little gift I made for my big sister, the one with the little boy, and the one who is very stylish and basically is a modern mama indeed.

Her December Birthday was coming up the other day (sorry, little sister missed it as her flight from LA got delayed), but it happened that same day, would you believe just a few hours earlier. Well, I was really stuck on what to get her ~ I saw some cool faux fur stockings the other day and I instantly knew she would love them. But wait, what do I get? A set of two large, grown up stockings? Obviously that would not be proper to exclude their little almost-two-year-old son. So I had an idea, dug around in my fabric drawer and pulled out some grey toned faux fur strip that I purchased a while ago (yes, sometimes I just get excited about doing some craft, get the supplies, and then they just sit in one of my drawers – so it’s kind of a normal thing that when I need, let’s say, faux fur, I just open up a drawer and there it is! ;)

I decided to make a little stocking from the faux fur and make a really cool modern stocking for the chic mama as a gift.

You can easily find a small roll of faux fur in most craft stores or even department stores, and of course by the meter in fabric stores. I worked with what I had and I was a little limited with the size of my stocking ~ but it worked out just fine.

Materials: faux fur fabric, (as much as you need for the size of your stocking, I used a 4″ craft strip x 1 yard and it was enough for a small stocking), fabric scissors, needle and thread, chalk or fabric pencil to mark your shape., a small piece of elastic or shoelace for the loop on top.

1-2. because I worked with a fixed width of 4″, I needed to add to make my curve from extra pieces. 3-5. mark equal parts, so you create a matching front and back, and cut.  6. pin front sides in.

7. stitch all around. 8. poke in the top and slowly unfold. 9. add a small piece of black elastic to make a loop. 10. all done.

Here are all the 3 stockings with the baby in the centre.  And then my little nephew already enjoying his fun new furry toy ~ before Santa will fill it with goodies come Christmas Night ;)

I would have loved to take credit for all three, but I did end up buying the two large stockings. Sometimes, being creative isn’t about the sweat and tears of starting a full big project from scratch. Sometimes my ‘to do’ list is a little much and then I end up disappointed that I can’t get through all my projects. I’ve learned to keep the list a little smaller as I get older but I still do create.

Give yourself a break sometimes, and if you want to create ~ yes, do create and make handmade gifts ~ but sometimes, be realistic and  just do what you can. It’s ok if you can’t do things from scratch, what’s really lovely I think, is working with purchased gifts sometimes and personalizing them somehow with either embroidery, or adding some finishing touches that really set it apart and make it special ;)

How are you doing in the ‘making gifts’ department? Do you make your own gifts?
Please share your ideas on finding or making the perfect gift ;)

sixth of december

Today is a very exciting day in our house. It’s Saint Nicholas Day ~ and we get to celebrate Christmas early with a little gift that he brings this morning. It’s a tradition celebrated in some cultures, and just like we did when we were growing up, we are enjoying seeing our little girl jumping with joy over the toy that St. Nick will leave under her pillow…. So as the excitement continues in our house, let me jump into a different topic – my late posting of our cute advent calendar.

Honestly I wanted to do something really crafty as I see so many wonderful ideas out there to mark the countdown to Christmas, but realistically I knew it just wasn’t going to happen. I did start a cute alternative to having 24 gifts but I didn’t think this was blog worthy ~ until I saw the real excitement of this through my little 4 year old’s eyes. So maybe it’s not the craftiest project, but it sure is a hit and of course I have to share just in case someone out there has a little kid and still wants to jump on the advent-calendar-bandwagon.

What I used was 1 box and 1 bow and 24 Little Pet Shop and Bratz toys and accessories ~ if you have a youngster in your family, you know this is really HOT stuff! ;) This is of course geared for girls, but any little toys such as Hotwheels would be great for boys around this age.

By the way, do you know the little tip for tying the prefect bow?

To tie the perfect bow, all you need to do is simply arrange the gift you’re going to wrap away from you ~ so you’re seeing it’s back ~ and tie the ribbon upside down. It seems unnatural to tie a bow upside down ~ but this is really as simple as that. You get a perfect bow every time and there’s really no tricks ~ you tie it as you would your shoe strings ~ and then turn around to face you and fix a bit to even the sides and trim the ends.

Now back to my little girl with her presents…. So this is what happens: I put one toy in the box and wrap with ribbon and hide it somewhere in the house. Then upon my daughter’s return from kindergarten we play the Hot and Cold game! This is an insanely fun game and an exciting way to find her gift.

The next day, I re-use the box and ribbon ~ see, told you this was easy ;) and repeat! My daughter kind of thinks there’s wrapped up gifts all over the house from day one – ahhh to see the wonder through the child’s eyes ;)

Here’s a happy Saint Nicholas Day to you ;) Who wouldn’t love an early Christmas present, right? My little girl is getting a Yoda, Star Wars toy ~ don’t ask! lol (cause I can’t even explain that one ;)

By the way, Santa just sent a message for Miss G ~ take a look at this video here. She was in such excitement over this! If you have not heard of Portable North Pole yet – you must set this up for the kids in your family. It is so much fun ;)

ps. I have a lot of things lined up for you this week ~ be sure to visit often for special posts including a giveaway ;) xo

make your own pottery-like vase

One quiet evening, when piano music replaced the rustling daytime noise and a hot camomile tea was steaming up on my kitchen table…. I started to create a simple object from items I had on hand. This craft project wasn’t planned ~ it just happened and evolved  into a beautiful piece of art. I had a nice evening to myself and a pretty table accessory by the morning. Simple is always beautiful.
Create a simple Salt Dough recipe by combining your ingredients: 4 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1-1/2 cups warm water. I like to dilute the salt in the water first to remove all the crystals. Keep some flour and warm water on hand. A sprinkle of flour will prevent from sticking and a little warm water will act as glue.  Knead out into a shape that would roughly cover your bottle or jar.  With your hands, start wrapping and shaping the dough all around to cover your glass. Pay attention to the thickness of your dough so that it’s even all around and covers the glass nicely without any thin see-through spots. Using the extra dough, you can create shapes, flowers and designs that would get added to your vase. This dough forms easily (like playdough) and it’s simple to create unique shapes and designs.

Once your design is ready, place the item on a baking tray and place in a preheated oven to 250 F. and bake for about 2-3 hours (depending on the size). Watch so it looks dry and does not start to yellow. Turn oven off but leave the piece still in the oven to cool completely, even over night.

Once it cools down completely you can paint your design. I chose a simple white acrylic paint as I wanted to preserve the clean simplicity of the design.

I hope you like this project and you will try it yourself. These would be beautiful as gifts for the holidays and a great fun project to do with kids. I will to do a project like this with miss Gabriella very soon ~ we’ll see what creative spin a 4 year old will put on this ;)

ps. these are not forever, they may crack over time with the change of temperatures or direct sunlight etc. But they are lovely to make and definitely add a great unique touch to a vignette. It’s practically free to make them so it’s still very much worth it ;) Once you’re done with them, just soak and peel off the baked-on dough and give the glass bottle yet another new life. xo
